Founders Biography

Becky Kern is the Owner of Severe Safety Institute LLC and a retired Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Omaha, Nebraska. With 26 years of federal service, she is recognized as a trusted voice for weather safety across the central Plains. In 2024, she was named one of the Omaha World-Herald’s Midlanders of the Year for her role in “undoubtedly saving numerous lives” alongside the National Weather Service team in Omaha/Valley.

Throughout her career, Becky supported federal, state, and local agencies, emergency managers, educational institutions, businesses, and major event organizers as they prepared for and responded to high impact weather. Her experience includes tornado outbreaks, severe thunderstorms, winter storms, flash flooding, long duration river flooding, wildfire weather, and aviation impacts. She is known for her steady communication style and her ability to translate complex meteorological information into clear, practical guidance that leaders can use in rapidly evolving situations.

Through Severe Safety Institute LLC, Becky helps businesses, agencies, schools, and communities bridge the gap between forecasts and real world decisions. She brings extensive expertise in crisis communication, risk evaluation, and safety planning, guiding organizations in adopting methods and strategies that work. Her approach focuses on finding tailored solutions that help clients effectively use the most accurate forecasts created by the nation’s top meteorologists.
